Small factual note on one contextual sentence (not the archival core of the piece, which is excellent): China's was a bourgeois nationalist party's betrayal of the united front (btw, Comintern had earlier advised the CCP to join up with the KMT), the author's own earlier phrase, "ending the united front with non-communist forces," fits this better than "the moderate left turned its back." Britain's severance of ties with the USSR was a Conservative government action under Baldwin, not a reformist one either. And the 1927 Vienna general strike was called by the SDAPÖ and Trade Union Council itself (arguably to restrain workers), not ignored by them after a communist call.
